Learning Auckland Data update 2013-2014

500,000 young people aged 0-24 live here (almost 40% of Aucklanders) – there are more young Aucklanders than people in Wellington. They are our biggest asset.

But the 2013-2014 Data Update shows at least 20% of our young people do not thrive in our education and skills system:

  • Lots of effort and investment is going into improving outcomes but it’s not joined up.
  • Success is largely determined by where young people live.
  • Participation in early childhood education by itself isn’t sufficient to get children a head start; literacy challenges start early and continue through life.
  • Māori and Pasifika are doing better in some indicators. But we have tram lines – everyone is doing a bit better but the gaps aren’t closing.
  • Too many young people leave school not work ready, without qualifications or with qualifications that aren’t equipping them for life. Our employers say they can’t get staff; yet our young people are unemployed.
  • There are job vacancies, yet local people don’t have skills that match what employers want.
